Common Medical Techniques and Procedures: Cytology
  Introduction
This section was designed to provide you with a basic look into cytology for leopard geckos.

Why may cytology be necessary for your leopard gecko?  Cytology can help you and your veterinarian better assess and understand the medical problems that your gecko may be experiencing.  It is often one of the most useful medical techniques and diagnostic tools available at your veterinarians disposal.

Cytology involves the microscopic analysis of various cells that have been obtained from your gecko in a variety of ways.

  • Needle aspirate
  • Concentration prep
  • Smear
  • Touch prep
  • Scrape
  • Wet mount

It could involve the examination of various tissues, fluids or even fecal matter.

Please read our Disclaimer before reading any further into these common medical techniques and procedures.

  What Is Examined?
Here is a brief overview of some of the things that your veterinarian may examine more closely during routine cytology:
  • Blood
  • Abscess, cyst contents or masses
  • Abnormal scales
  • Bone marrow
  • Cerebrospinal fluid
  • Discoloured or enlarged organs

  • and more....
