Common Medical Techniques and Procedures: Endoscopy
  Introduction
This section was designed to provide you with a basic look into endoscopy for leopard geckos.

Why may endoscopy be necessary for your leopard gecko?  Endoscopy can help you and your veterinarian better assess and understand the medical problems that your gecko may be experiencing.  It is often one of the most useful medical techniques and diagnostic tools available at your veterinarians disposal.

While endoscopy is commonly used for diagnosing medical problems, it can also be used to treat a reptile in a less invasive manner than surgery.  For example, it can reduce the need for surgery to remove a foreign object/obstruction.

Please read our Disclaimer before reading any further into these common medical techniques and procedures.

  How Does It Work
Here is a brief overview of some of the things that your veterinarian may do during routine endoscopy:
  • May opt to use either rigid or flexible endoscopy.
  • The gecko may be anesthetized.
  • Gecko my need to be restrained.
  • Radiographs may be taken initially for a better understanding/plan of action.
  • Stomach contents may be emptied.
