Feeding A Leopard Gecko: Gut Loading Feeder Insects
  Background Information
It is extremely important that all feeder insects be fed a highly nutritious diet prior to being fed to your leopard gecko.  The process of "feeding the food" is called gut-loading.

Most insects that are shipped and stored at pet stores are lacking in nutritional value - often times the nutritional quality of diets fed to crickets are inadequate to provide proper nutrition to the gecko.

  • In order to gut-load your feeder insects, simply place them in a container for 24 hours prior to feeding them to your gecko, and offer them a highly nutritious insect diet.

  • Be sure to replace food and sources of moisture daily to prevent various fungi and bacteria from developing.

You are what you eat!

  Sample Diets
Dr. Gecko recommends and advocates using the Ultimate Feeder Insect Diet for gut-loading your feeder insects.  Many people are currently using this diet and are experiencing great results not only with their leopard geckos, but also with other insect-eating reptiles.

Other commonly used gut-loading diets include:

  • Commercially available gut-load diets.

  • Ground grains (barley, oatmeal, wheat germ and more) and high quality flaked baby cereal combined with calcium carbonate.

Moisture can be provided to your feeder insects by using a variety of fruits and vegetables.  Dr. Gecko likes to vary the types used and will often use:

  • Collard greens
  • Dandelion greens
  • Watercress
  • Mustard greens
  • Prickly pear
  • Spaghetti squash
