Common
Medical Conditions and Health Problems: Hemoparasites
| |
Please read our Disclaimer
before reading any further into these common problems. As
with any medical problem, we strongly recommend that you
immediately contact your veterinarian for assistance.
Hemoparasites are actually found in the blood of
reptiles. While they are not common, they can develop
into a problem periodically.
|
|
| |
Most hemoparasites do not actually cause overt
symptoms of disease. However, if they are
expected/diagnosed, the most common problem tends to be
anemia. |
|
| |
There are three main groups of hemoparasites
that reptiles harbor. These are:
- Trypanosomes
- Haemogregarines
- Plasomodium and Heamoproteus
The more specific hemoparasites found within those three
groups include:
- Trypanosomes
- Microflilaria
- Leishmania
- Hepatozoon
- Plasmodium
- Haemogregaria
- Karyolysus
|
|
| |
There are a wide range of
diagnostic techniques available to your
veterinarian. These could include:
- Complete physical examination.
- Complete patient history and overview of
husbandry practices.
- Blood
work.
|
|
|
|
| |
As noted earlier, most hemoparasites do not
cause over symptoms of disease. If they however, they
will require treatment. Your vet will have the most
appropriate therapeutic plan in the event of such a
diagnosis. |
