Common Medical Techniques and Procedures: Personal Hygiene
  Introduction
One of most commonly over-looked factors of gecko husbandry is the proper practice of personal hygiene.  The goal is to prevent the potential spread of various pathogens including viruses, bacteria and parasites.
  When To Wash Your Hands
It is highly recommended that you thoroughly wash your hands in the following situations:
  • Prior to and after contact with any wounds or other pathogens.
  • Prior to and after contact with a sick gecko.
  • In between handling multiple geckos.
  • Prior to any invasive procedure (ie wound dressing, administering meds etc...).
  • Prior to and after contact with even a healthy gecko.
  • Prior to and after cleaning and disinfecting enclosures etc...
  How To Wash Your Hands
The following steps are recommended to ensure one thoroughly washes their hands:
  1. Remove all jewelry.
  2. Thoroughly wet hands.
  3. Apply soap or antiseptic - depending on what is available.
  4. Vigorously rub forearms, wrists, fingers, hands and under nails for at least 15 seconds.
  5. Rinse all parts thoroughly under running water.
  6. Use a clean towel to dry hands.  Use of a paper towel would be preferable.
  7. Use a paper towel to turn off the faucet.
