If you suspect your gecko may have a prolapse,
it is critical that you transport your gecko to your
veterinarian immediately. This will prevent the
possible tearing, puncturing or stepping on of the prolapse,
as well as any secondary infections or even tissue necrosis.
To transport your gecko, moisten a piece of gauze or
cloth with water or saline. Wrap this around the
prolapse and contact your veterinarian asap!
Ultimately the most appropriate therapeutic
plan will depend on the organ that has prolapsed and the
severity of the prolapse itself. Common
treatment options could include:
- Tissue may be soaked in a saturated sugar solution or
glycerin to decrease the swelling.
- Sutures and organ replacement.
- Topical medications to reduce swelling.
- Systemic or topical antibiotics for infection if
present.
- Amputation may be required depending on the severity
or the possible presence of infection and/or necrosis.
When dealing with medical problems, proper personal hygiene,
quarantine
and disinfection
techniques are absolutely necessary.
