Medical Conditions and Health Problems: Septicemia

in leopard geckos is a very serious
medical problem and requires immediate veterinary intervention.
Septicemia is the clinical name for blood poisoning and
actually has a significantly high mortality rate. It
is a common infectious disease that is usually attacks those
individuals with underlying health problems.

There most common symptoms of septicemia
include:

The most common cause of septicemia in
reptiles is actually caused by a bacteria - specifically Aeromonas
hydrophilia. This bacteria is commonly transmitted
via contaminated water sources and is highly infectious.
However, septicemia usually develops after on in
conjunction with another infection. The more common
infections include stomatitis
(ulcerative), pneumonia
and even various wounds/lesions
or abscesses.

The common diagnostic techniques
available to your veterinarian include:
- Complete physical examination.
- Thorough patient history and overview of
husbandry.
- Blood work

If septicemia has been identified in your
leopard gecko, the most common treatment option is the
intensive use of antibiotics.
The most common antibiotics used for septicemia include:
- Streptomycin
- Neomycin
- Tetracycline
- Chloramphenicol
Underlying medical problems problems/diseases will also
be addressed at the same time.
When dealing with medical problems, proper personal hygiene,
quarantine
and disinfection
techniques are absolutely necessary.
